For older children who have left homework to the last possible minute, a desk light will provide the means to write up that essay in the wee small hours of the night.
Immensely movable, desk lighting can be moved to wherever their light is needed; they come in portable, pocket sized versions, clamp on versions, luxury versions, and, if you're in retro mood, the old anglepoise models are still out there too.
